What is the relationship between governmental buildings and public space around them?

Threshold of Powers is a hands-on photo essay that explores this question in the context of The Hague.

Captured from a 4-meter-high vantage point, the photos combine the human standpoint with a broader spatial perspective, offering a deeper understanding of the dynamics at play.

The research combines walking as a tool for spontaneous observation with a structured framework based on a specific route, running west to east from Den Haag Centraal.

The area is central and operational, porous yet secured. A dictionary of symbols helps in recognizing recurring patterns, both architectural and related to spatial use.

What stories do these spaces tell you? Can we imagine a more meaningful and reciprocal relationship between architecture and the open spaces around it?
